If you have diabetes, it is important to look after yourself. Here are a few tips on how to make sure that you stay healthy.
Look after your feet
People with diabetes suffer from the same foot problems as those without diabetes, but these foot problems can be a risk to diabetics if they do not take proper care. If a callus on the foot is left untreated, it can eventually form an ulcer, which can become infected and gangrene may occur, ultimately resulting in the amputation of the foot. Make sure that you inspect your feet regularly for any cuts, corns and calluses and treat them early.
Look after your eyes
It is important to regularly have your eyes checked by an eye doctor for cataracts or any other eye diseases that may cause blindness in the long term. If your blood sugar levels are well controlled, it also lessens the risk of eye problems.
Look after your wounds
Make sure that any wounds, cuts or grazes are treated immediately to avoid any infection occurring.
Look after your blood sugar levels
People with Type 2 diabetes and their health care team should work hard to lower blood sugar levels to as close to normal as possible. The correct long-term management of your blood sugar may reduce the risk of long-term complications. Better blood sugar control may reduce the risk of major diabetic eye disease and early kidney damage.
