What is Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is developed when your body doesn't produce insulin; or enough insulin, or is unable to use the insulin produced effectively. Without insulin your body cannot get the energy it needs. Studies have shown that if blood glucose and cholesterol levels, and blood pressure are kept within normal limits, the risk of damage to the body is reduced. Therefore, it is important to know if you have diabetes.
Diabetes symptoms include:
- Frequent urination
- Abnormal thirst and dry mouth
- Extreme tiredness/lack of energy
- Constant hunger
- Sudden weight loss
- Blurred vision
- Recurrent infections
Diabetes and Hyperglycaemia
Hyperglycaemia occurs when a person's blood glucose level is too high (above 15mmol/L). The causes for this condition are:
- Skipping medication
- Too much starch
- Lack of exercise
- Stressful moments
- Untreated infections
Hypoglycemia and Diabetes In people with diabetes, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) develops when there is not enough glucose in your body. A number of different factors can cause hypoglycemia, including:
- Overmedication
- Skipping meals
- Over exercising
- Unplanned exercise
