Who is at risk/who can get diabetes?
We are all at risk, from a new baby to people 100 years old.
People at high risk.
Risk factors for type1 diabetes occur mainly in adults, it is fast becoming a major problem in the adolescent age group in many parts of the world. Therefore anyone, anywhere, at any age is at risk of developing diabetes. These are:
- Obesity (80% of people with diabetes are overweight)
- Age (over 40)
- Lack of exercise
- Family history of diabetes
- Being pregnant with a huge baby-over 4.1 kg
- Impaired glucose tolerance
- Race/ethnicity (particular groups such as Asians, Indians, America Indians, African Americans are prone to develop type 2 diabetes)
- Stress (although the exact relation is still unclear, it seems that stress can be a cause)
