Our Activities

WDF INSULIN PROGRAM

This is a program sponsored by World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) to provide free insulin, testing machines (glucometers), testing strips, lancets and related services to selected needy children of ages;0-14 years all over the country.

Currently, the project has 87 children who are reviewed regularly at the Centre and get the diagnostics as per need. These children are required to visit their nearest health facility in addition to them coming at the Centre for education and supplies.

The project can only support 90 children.

Our most recent activities in this program have been as follows:-

1. Sharing forum for the children, parents, DMI Board of Directors & staff, Dr. William Maina of the Ministry of Public Health & Sanitation, Mr. Freud Seth of Novo Nordisk America and Dr. Anil Kapur, Managing Director, WDF. This took place on 11th September 2010 at the DMI Centre, Nairobi.

2. Home Visits- We have scheduled a visit for the children in Central Province to check on their well being and encourage the families to take good care of them. This will take place on 8th -10th December.

DIABETES YOUTH CAMPS

These are being held in various parts of the country. The aim is to bring the children living with diabetes together where they are trained and encouraged to share experiences on positive living. Our sponsors are: - Johnson & Johnson, Isis Ltd and Safaricom Foundation.

In August 2010, we held a camp at Bible Translation and Literacy Centre (BTL Centre), Ruiru for 100 children.

We intend to hold a similar camp at The Stem Hotel, Nakuru on 2nd- 4th December for 50 children from Rift Valley and Nyanza Provinces.

MOBILE FOOT CARE PROJECT

The project?s aim is to train health care providers on diabetic foot care all over the country.

Our most recent activities for this project are;

1. DMI Centre training (which is one of the 10 Centres that were to be trained) - This was done at Brackenhurst International Hotel, Limuru on 7th & 8th October 2010. All the staff members, 3 of the Board of Directors and 2 full time volunteers were trained.

2. Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) - This is a follow up in the trained Provincial General Hospitals on the implementation and use of the equipment provided to them. The first M & E was on 14th-15th October at Coast Province. The second M&E will be on 15th-18th November in; Kisii Level 5, Kisumu, Kakamega and Nakuru Provincial Hospitals.

Mobile Foot Clinic- This clinic was donated by Safaricom Foundation and equipped by WDF. Its launch will be on 24th November at the New Safaricom House on Waiyaki way.

4. Provincial Coordinators Advanced training- This is a refresher training which will be done on 24th-26th November 2010 at the Grace House Resort, behind Yaya Centre.

NATIONAL DIABETES COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM

This is a 5 year program for DMI Centre in partnership with the Ministries of Health and funded by WDF. The aim is to train professional health care providers country wide on prevention and control of diabetes and set up comprehensive diabetes clinics.

The biggest achievement in the one year is the development of: National Diabetes Policy Documents which are; National Diabetes Strategy (NDS), Diabetes Educators Manual (DETM), Diabetes Clinical Guidelines (DCG) and the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Training Manual (DCC) which were launched by the Minister for Public Health & Sanitation, Hon. Beth Mugo on 10th September 2010 at the Fairmont, Norfolk Hotel. Distribution of the documents to the stakeholders is ongoing.

It is in this program that we are funded to celebrate the World Diabetes Day (WDD) in selected Districts yearly. (See WDD Section).

IMPROVING ACCESS TO QUALITY DIABETES CARE AND MANAGEMENT FOR SLUM RESIDENTS IN NAIROBI

This is a 3 year program for DMI Centre in partnership with the Nairobi City Council (NCC) funded by WDF through African Population Health & Research Centre (APHRC). The aim is to provide accessible quality diabetes care and management in the Nairobi slums of Korogocho and Viwandani.

We have trained health care providers in all the NCC clinics and Provide International clinics and we intend to have a refresher course for them on 29th November & 7th December 2010.
