DMI ACTIVITIES
The Centre in partnership with various organizations and corporate entities has undertaken various community-based activities since inception. These are promoted in areas with great need, sometimes way out of the main town centers where such services are most appreciated. The bulk of the activities is prevention, both primary and secondary and for the diabetics, good management to avoid complications. In the areas covered, new cases have been diagnosed, some being admitted as emergencies. Through the free screening camps, data collected so far indicates that the biggest percentage of those diagnosed has been in the last five years (44.5%).
Annual Fundraiser events
These are the Safaricom Diabetes Walk in July and the in annual Charity Golf Tournament. These support some of the activities with no funding and also salaries, rent and other general administration expenses.
The centre has continued to organize annual fund-raising events to support her daily running activities and to ensure the need to continue creating awareness and disseminating information on diabetes prevention and practical management practices. Some of these activities include but not limited to;
Annual Charity Golf Tournament
Intra Africa Assurance Co. Ltd has been the main sponsor of this event for the last close to 10 years. Through this event, we have been able to support various Centre oriented activities such as; Screening & Awareness Program for various corporate entities who have expressed need for education sessions for their employees. DMI has used this opportunity to not only educate but also screening for Diabetes and Hypertension to these employees. These sessions have been a lot of help due to the scant public information on diabetes
Annual Safaricom Diabetes Walk
The Centre has been holding the diabetes walk since 2001.Safaricom Foundation has been sponsoring the walk since 2005. The Walk is both an intensive awareness and fund raising project to facilitate the centre activities such as provision of an. There is a great hype for 1-2 months preceding the Walk and targeted groups and education institutions are visited and talks given.
Countrywide Medical Camps - (2005- continuing)
These are carried out in various parts of Kenya in conjunction with Safaricom Foundation, Kenya Power & Lighting Ltd. and the local M.P where the camp takes place. Data collected from the voluntary community diabetes screening has been useful in forming the basis for the need for funding diabetes activities in Kenya. Data is also shared with the local health facilities to be included in their monthly reports to headquarters and also for their planning.
Funds raised help in sustaining the insulin bank for children below 18 years of age who are unable to purchase insulin throughout the country, create awareness and training on diabetes.
Our target group therefore is all members of the public including corporates who help make the success of this event possible. Screening & Awareness Program
The Centre has continued to engage various corporate entities who have expressed need for education sessions for their employees. This has been possible due to the continuous support that DMI has enjoyed over the years from their major sponsors in the fund-raising events, such as Annual Golf sponsored by Intra Africa Assurance Co. Ltd for almost 10 years. DMI has used this opportunity to not only educate but also screening for Diabetes and Hypertension to these employees. These sessions have been a lot of help due to the scant public information on diabetes. The free community screening has been very successful with about 160,767 screened and new diabetes cases continue to rise. With funding, the Centre is confident it will get involved in more intensive diabetes education programmes and therefore curb the rapid increase.
